Date Night

Welcome back!

I knew from a pretty young age that if there was any one thing I wanted to be when I was older it was definitely to be a mum. Now at the age of 35, I feel very blessed to be able to say that, my husband and I have 2 wonderful daughters, our eldest is 13 and our youngest is 8.

Don’t get me wrong I cherish every moment I have with my girls because it’s all too real how short life can be, time really does fly by, one minute you’ve got them cradled in your arms so angelic and innocent, completely reliant on you and the next they are telling you to “Stop embarrassing me!” and asking you if they can hang out at the park with their boyfriend of six months… and I’m like NEVER!!

From baby to teenager in what feels like a blink of an eye! I am the worrying type which probably comes as no surprise to you based on my ongoing journey with Anxiety.

I am very happy and excited to see them grow and become the incredible people they will soon become, but if they could just do it in the slowest, safest, most low risk way possible that would make me even happier.  I know it’s never going to happen.  I too was a child once I know how it works but I am going to live blissfully in the hope that by some miracle it may still happen that way for us.

Our date night rituals

As for most when you become a parent the child free evenings/days are few and far between, but when the opportunity arises it really is the MOST exciting moment!

I love my kids more than anything but I am still a human being, being able to spend an evening and not have to think about the 5 different meals you’ve got to cook because no one in the house wants to eat the same thing feels like an absolute gift.

I don’t think as a parent I’m in the minority when I say this…but no kids 100% mean’s no cooking! Whether it’s a meal out or a cosy night in front of the tele with a takeaway, it’s like an unwritten rule in the parent’s guide book to the perfect date night. No kid’s, no cooking and even better no cleaning up after!  You just never know when you might have a child free night again, so wasting it isn’t an option!

We also like to take a trip to our local dessert shop because if you’re not having a date night with an indulgent and overpriced dessert then you’re doing it all wrong!  There is a dessert restaurant by us called Creams that do some amazing desserts and even better they cater for vegans, and not just a few crappy options they have loads, which is how we ended up there! A bit pricey but a great treat!

Over the years we have for some reason developed a strange date night tradition that we now do every time we are child free. We have our meal and dessert and then instead of going straight home, we like to live a little on the wild side and venture to our local supermarket for a late-night wonder and browse. (Late night to us means about 8:30/9pm)

We never go with the intention or need to buy anything, call me strange but there is just something really enjoyable about walking around a supermarket in the evening, when it’s not for the big food shop, with no children and absolutely no time restrictions, I really love it and I can’t explain why… let me know if I’m on my own with this or if you too enjoy a late- night supermarket browse.

Then comes my favourite part, home time.  Time to go home take off my make-up, pjs on and honestly get straight into bed because by this point it’s already 9:30 and we are both exhausted!

At the end of our night, I always think to myself next time maybe we could do something different, be a little more adventurous, go out out and even stay up past 10:30pm, but honestly, that’s never going to happen because that’s not who we are.  I used to feel like we were wasting our evenings because they are always so simple, some might even say boring, but as I get older, I’ve realised that the perfect date night looks different for everyone and quite honestly, I’m very happy with the little date night rituals we’ve created for ourselves.

What does date night look like for you?
